Gaudi house museum – Casa Vicens: once private but not anymore

Gaudi house museum – Casa Vicens is the first paid work of one of the most worth mentioning characters of the universal architecture of all times. The artist supports the traditional construction style along with his extraordinary creativity and control over shapes and structural patterns which make him an unrivaled and evident performer.

Antonio Gaudí y Cornet was born in Reus or Riudoms en 1852 and died in 1926. It was a famous architect who has been internationally recognized as one of the greatest prodigious experts on his discipline, as well as the maximum exponents of modernism. His exceptional geniality was the mastermind of a unique, personal and incomparable architectural language, difficult to label.

He came from a boilermaker family, a fact that allowed to the young genius to acquire a special ability to deal with space and volume while helping his father and grandfather in their workshop. His ease of conceiving tridimensional domains and the material transformations prospered to conduct him to create structures like Templo Expiatorio de La Sagrada Familia, Parque Guell, Casa Milá, el Palacio  Episcopal de Astorga, etc..

Barcelona is the Gaudi’s city. Six of his works constructed in this metropolis are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including of course Casa Vicens, which was awarded in 2005. It constituted his initial project assigned. A spot where the architect applied all his baggage, using the resources, influences and experiences obtained on other labors developed during his scholar stage.

Here Gaudi expressed his personal belief about a family home as a particular unit where construction elements and diverse styles of ornaments are integrated or combined making impossible to understand one without the other. Since last December it was opened to the general public as a museum that once in Barcelona everybody can visit and enjoy on his/her own or by a guided tour. Take time to see Casa Vicens!
